RARE LENGTH OF 17C RETICELLA LACE

An extreme form of cutwork known as 'Reticella' meaning 'small grid or network' and was carried out in the 17C mainly in Flanders and Italy this involved areas of fabric being cut away and filled with various forms of needlework.

They were used for wide ruffs, standing collars and cuffs. Please see 'Antique Lace' by Heather Toomer for further details of this type of lace.

This panel of reticella measures 25" x 2.5", it has the lovely cool feel of early linen lace and is in very good condition.

This lace was purchased at a Christies textile sale in London many years ago.
