UNUSUAL AND RARE 17C DRAWN THREADWORK LACE PANEL

An unusual and rare 17C drawn threadwork panel, made in Italy. This was a form of whitework embroidery in which holes were pierced into the linen panel, threads withdrawn or small areas cut away to form openwork fabrics the spaces being filled by needlework.

This particular panel which has a scalloped bobbin lace border, feels very cool to the touch which is always a sign of very early work.
It measures 12" x 13", there is a join 3" from one end. It is very stylised in design with cross forms around the edge and leaves to one corner.

There is also a strange animal/bird in two corners and a sort of heraldic design in the centre.
It is in amazing condition for its age.

This was purchased many years ago from a Phillips (now Bonhams) Textile sale in London.
